Froglife's Frog
Disease Appeal

Frog disease is serious stuff. Worldwide, amphibian disease is thought to be linked to a number of species extinctions. Disease sits alongside habitat loss as one of the most serious issues in modern amphibian conservation.

With our partners the Institute of Zoology, Froglife has been working on amphibian disease since 1992 through our Frog Mortality Project.

Although the project now provides a key mechanism for finding out more about incidences of emerging infectious disease, we have much more to do. Sadly however our capacity to act is very limited: currently the Frog Mortality Project is funded almost entirely by small yearly donations from just 500 Froglife Friends.

In 2008, we are seeking urgent financial support from the public so that the Frog Mortality Project can expand and better inform scientists of the disease threat, working toward a safer future for the UK's amphibians.

Specifically we are seeking funds to:

  • Cover additional staff costs for manning our busy enquiry service, for disease casework and for data acquisition and crucial research during the important summer months.

  • Raise funds for website development and online submission and mapping of disease events.

  • Raise staff capacity towards development of a larger self-funding project working with the Institute of Zoology and Defra.

At Froglife, we feel we cannot afford to sit back on this issue when the consequences for our native amphibians are potentially so serious.

If you would like to help us financially in our work we would be delighted to hear from you. You can support our work on amphibian disease in the following ways:
